Installing Applications on Ubuntu with Add/Remove

The term "Add/Remove Programs" seems more appropriate to Windows than to Linux however, Ubuntu does offer this option (besides apt-get and synamptic) to locate and install software on your Dapper Drake machine.

NOTE: You may want to review the tutorial: How to Install Macromedia Flash Player 7 for Firefox on Ubuntu and make sure you performed all of the steps in the Prerequisites section before proceeding here.

Opening Add/Remove is like visiting a candy store but there are steps you can take to increase the number of options in the "candy jar". Follow along with these steps and see for yourself.

  1. On the overhead panel, click Applications.
  2. Click Add/Remove
NOTE: The program will take a few moments to check on installed and available applications.
  3. When the Add/Remove Applications dialog opens, review the menu on the left-hand side.

  4. Click the category you are interested in.
NOTE: In this exercise, we'll choose Internet.
  5. Scroll through the list in the Applications pane to see if there is a program that interests you here.
